When a loading bay fails without warning, every minute of downtime has a cost, missed deliveries, frustrated customers, and staff left standing idle. For one of our clients operating a high-volume distribution facility, that’s exactly what happened during early morning operations.
Here’s how Nova Industrial Services responded, diagnosed the fault, and had the loading bay fully operational again before the end of the same working day.
The Problem
The client’s dock leveller had become completely inoperable, and the loading bay door was partially jammed, creating both an immediate health and safety risk and a hard stop on vehicle movements in and out of the facility. With inbound and outbound deliveries scheduled throughout the day, getting the bay back online wasn’t just a maintenance job, it was a business-critical priority.
Our Emergency Response
The call-out request was received and immediately logged as high priority. An engineer was dispatched and on site within the agreed 4-hour SLA window. On arrival, temporary safety measures were put in place to secure the area and prevent any risk of injury to staff working nearby.
A full inspection was then carried out, not just to identify the immediate fault, but to look for any underlying issues that might cause further problems down the line.
The Diagnosis
The inspection revealed two connected faults that had combined to seize the equipment:
- A failure of the hydraulic hoses within the dock leveller
- Significant misalignment and wear to the shutter door tracks, the result of prolonged use without intervention
Neither issue in isolation would necessarily have caused a full shutdown, but together they had pushed the system to failure.
The Solution
Rather than applying a temporary fix and returning at a later date, our engineer completed the repairs in full during the same visit. New hydraulic hoses were installed and the dock leveller was tested under load to confirm correct operation. The shutter door tracks were realigned and new rollers fitted to restore smooth, reliable movement. Before leaving site, all safety systems were thoroughly checked and signed off.
Our priority is always to resolve issues completely on the first visit. Minimising disruption and avoiding the cost and inconvenience of return calls.
The Outcome
By the end of the working day, the loading bay was fully operational. Health and safety risks had been eliminated, and the client was able to proceed with all scheduled deliveries without further disruption to staffing, customers, or revenue.
“The rapid response and professional repair work meant we avoided a full shutdown. The engineer kept us informed throughout and ensured everything was safe before leaving site.”
Added Value
Beyond the immediate repair, our engineer provided preventative maintenance advice to reduce the risk of similar failures in future. A follow-up inspection was recommended and duly scheduled.
As a direct result of this experience, the client has engaged Nova Industrial Services for an ongoing Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) contract — giving them the reassurance of regular professional servicing and a priority emergency response partner they can rely on.
